The Biology of Cleavage Fragments: A Brief Synthesis and Analysis of Current Knowledge
نویسنده
چکیده
Asbestos is a commercial term referring to 6 fibrous minerals from 2 mineralogical classes: serpentine and amphibole. Chrysotile, or white asbestos, is the only serpentine mineral. The asbestiform habit of amphibole asbestos is far more toxic than chrysotile. However, most amphibole minerals are found in the “non-asbestiform” state that pose few, if any, health risks. Comminution, whether deliberate during crushing or grinding, or incidental in usage may produce structures known as “cleavage fragments” from a wide variety of sources. A considerable body of evidence, gathered over the last 30 years, demonstrates that amphibole cleavage fragments do not show the same toxicity as their asbestiform analogues. Since there still continues to be confusion and controversy on this point, this review is aimed at resolving a major portion of this controversy. It has done so by bringing together the supporting mineralogical, animal and human evidence from many sources. These observations demonstrate that cleavage fragments and amphibole asbestos fibers have fundamentally different properties and these differences are biologically relevant. Indeed, the toxicity of respirable cleavage fragments is so much less than that of the fibrous amphiboles that by any reasonable measure they are not biologically

متن کاملSynthesis of Zinc Dimethyldithiocarbamate by Reductive Disulfide Bond Cleavage of Tetramethylthiuram Disulfide in Presence of Zn2+
The zinc(II) complex [Zn2(dmdtc)2(μ-dmdtc)2] has been synthesized directly from thiram ligand, containing a disulfide bond {dmdtc = N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamate; thiram = N,N-tetramethylthiuram disulfide}, and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. Surprisingly thiram, undergoes a reductive disulfide bond scission upon reaction with Zn2+ in methanolic media to give the [Z...
متن کاملSynthesis, In vitro Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activities of Some Novel Bis- 1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles
A series of novel bis-1,3,4-oxadizaoles were synthesized by oxidative cyclisation of respective Schiff bases derived from dicarbohydrazide using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as catalyst. The synthesized compounds were screened for in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC 87), Escherichia coli (MTCC 46) and antifungal activity against Candida albicans (NCIM 3471) by tw...
متن کاملH2 Elimination and C-C Bond Cleavage of Propene: A Theoretical Research
Propene dissociation channels were characterized by ab initio CCSD(T)/6-311++g(d,p) calculations. Inthis work the detailed mechanism of propene dissociation to C2H4+CH2, C2H2+H+CH3, C2H2+CH4 andC3H3+H2+H have been investigated. According to our calculations, ten fragments can be classified intofive dissociated channels. Our results point out that two mechanisms come into play in the H2 eliminat...
